About
Actual Size is a free 3D gallery you walk through in your browser, without a headset or signup. It holds 53,119 public-domain artworks in all, with 2,764 in the 3D gallery at true scale. You can see how much space each work takes up beside a person.
Why size
Online galleries often fit every artwork into the same thumbnail space. A 12 cm Dürer engraving can appear as large as a 5.72 metre Boucher tapestry. The images show their subjects and colours, while their physical scale gets lost.
At its recorded size, the engraving occupies a small patch of wall. The tapestry stretches across several metres of the room. You can move closer to inspect the engraving and step back to see the whole tapestry.
How it works
Each work uses real measurements in centimetres, with a 1.70 metre human silhouette nearby for scale. Rooms has a room for each major artist, sized to fit their work. Long Gallery rebuilds its corridor when you reorder by size, colour or year. The building grows around the dimensions of the artworks.
Who built it
I'm Nicola Harvey, and I built Actual Size. I'm an AI and Web3 strategist on Australia's Sunshine Coast. Through Her Frontier, I help women use AI and Web3 for their own work and ideas.
The idea behind it
Actual Size is the first working instrument of Artificial General Artistic Intelligence, a concept defined by Nicola Harvey.
